What the presentation will cover:

This presentation provides an overview of the Security Sensitive Biological Agents (SSBA) Regulatory Scheme, a national scheme with the purpose of preventing the deliberate misuse of biological agents through bio-terrorism and bio-crime.  The scheme aims to promote awareness of the importance of security in limiting the opportunities for acts of bio-crime or bio-terrorism with harmful biological agents.  The deliberate release of harmful biological agents such as viruses, bacteria, fungi and toxins has the potential to cause significant damage to human health, the environment and the Australian economy.  The presentation will detail the aims of the scheme, its administration, legislation and regulatory requirements, the list of SSBAs and how they are determined, and the monitoring and compliance of the regulated community.  Ms Amy Black is the Acting Director of the Laboratories and Health Security Section within the Office of Health Protection and Response (OHPR) at the Department of Health.  Along with Dr Gary Lum, Senior Medical Advisor at OHPR and Dr Andrew Berry, Inspector at the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR),  she will provide an informative presentation on the scheme and its position in the national landscape with regard to management of biological agents of security concern in Australia.

Presenter Information:

Dr Gary Lum has chaired the Public Health Laboratory Network and was a Vice President of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia.

From 1996 to 2007 Gary was the Supervising Pathologist for the Northern Territory.

In October 2003 Gary was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in the special Bali Bombing Investiture.

Gary joined the Department in 2007 to head the Health Emergency Management Branch. In 2013, Gary became a Principal Medical Adviser, an Honorary Visiting Medical Officer with Canberra Health Services, and an Honorary Professor in the Medical School of the Australian National University.

Ms Amy Black is the acting Director, Laboratories and Health Security at the Australian Government Department of Health.

Ms Black holds degrees in biological sciences and public health, and has had extensive and diverse Australian Government experience in immigration policy, aviation safety and health emergency management.

Ms Black has worked within Health on the enhancement of laboratory capacity and capability and health security for over a decade, and counts the implementation and administration of the Security Sensitive Biological Agents regulatory scheme among the highlights of her career.

Dr Andrew Berry, Inspector at the Office of the Gene Technology Regulator (OGTR) will be online to assist with OGTR questions if required.
