Mariana Corrales is an experienced Lab Manager and Sustainability Officer at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, with five years of hands-on leadership in environmental sustainability across medical research laboratories. Mariana has led the development and expansion of a sustainability certification program, engaging over 130 researchers and 27 labs and core facilities.
Her initiatives have delivered measurable impact, including a 600% return on investment, the repurposing of more than 450,000 litres of soft plastics, and annual sharps waste challenges that have reduced procurement costs by over $64,000. These efforts have driven statistically significant behavioural changes in laboratory waste management.
Mariana also served as the Eco-Chair of Peter Mac’s Green Labs Working Group for five years, fostering organisation-wide engagement in sustainable science. Here she transformed over 50 Green lab members into Green Champions through a 4-hour training workshop and led the “Be Good in the Hood” and “Water Savvy in the Lavvy” campaigns to reduce fume hood energy use and reduce water consumption in rest rooms.
She recently stepped down to Found and develop LAB ZER0, Australia’s first online sustainability benchmarking platform tailored to laboratory environments, which is set to launch this year.
