When we released the Conference Prospectus in June 2021, the Board was entirely confident that by November 2021, Australia would be well on the way to the new normal. As such, we had no hesitation in committing to the face-to-face event, and we were excited at the prospect of being able to engage in person once again.

Unfortunately, amidst a rapidly deteriorating pandemic situation along the eastern coast of Australia, and with a very uncertain roadmap out of the pandemic lockdowns within, and across states and territories, in late August the Board had to reluctantly concede that the likelihood of the Conference event being held as we had hoped was low. Subsequently, on 2 September 2021, the ABSANZ Board met and made the following resolutions:

  • Resolution 1: To delay the 2021 face-to-face Adelaide Conference until mid-2022
  • Resolution 2: To cancel the proposed 2022 face-to-face Brisbane Conference
  • Resolution 3: To not offer an online or virtual Conference in 2021, instead to offer and hold member events and activities for the benefit and engagement of the members

The Association has had strong feedback that there is fatigue in relation to online or virtual events and that the ABSANZ community is keen to engage in person, so we have committed to postponing until June 2022 to enable a face-to-face event to proceed.

In a significant demonstration of support to ABSANZ, over 90% of the existing Sponsors and Exhibitors have elected to transfer their financial commitment to the new event to be held in 2022. We thank them for their ongoing assistance, without which ABSANZ would not be able to operate.

The postponed event in its entirety will now be held from 27 June – 1 July 2022 at the Adelaide Convention Centre. The theme ‘Biosafety Crossroads – Where To From Here’ will remain.

Information in relation to Abstracts, registrations and all other Conference-related material will follow shortly.

Stay safe.
